7 Habits of Equitable Accommodations for College Students with Disabilities

Title of Presentation: 7 Habits of Equitable Accommodations for College Students with Disabilities

●       Session Type: Trends and Issues

●       Abstract: According to the National Disability data, 1 in 5 college students reported having a disability, yet over 40% of faculty do not believe their students need accommodation, 31% do not know how to accommodate, 29% of students are afraid to talk to professors about their accommodations, and another 33% never received adjustments despite handing the letter of accommodation to faculty. This presentation will delineate 7 habits of legal implications for “reasonable accommodation” to protect the rights of students, faculty, and the institution.

STOP THE LEAK: RETENTION THROUGH THE EYES OF THE STUDENTS.

At a time when enrollment is decreasing and demand for performance-based funding is increasing, we need to “Stop the Leak.” What is often missing in higher education programs is examining the efficacy of interventions “through the eyes of the student.”   Using evidence-based intervention, “My Aspiration Plan” (MAP) is a self-paced guide to help students develop skills in anticipating failures, handling frustrations, seeking timely support, utilizing campus resources, managing finances and time, creating a sense of belonging, and exercising self-care. The goal is to prevent further “leaks” by ensuring students successfully transition to and through college.
